The Heart behind 'get it on'
Maree Smith – Founder of Get It On, Tairua
For Maree Smith, style has always been second nature. From a young girl playing dress-ups in Pukekohe to founding one of Tairua’s most beloved fashion destinations, Maree’s journey is stitched together with colour, charisma, and a deep love for people.
Her first taste of retail came during high school with a weekend job at the fashion store Lady Love. There, a spirit of friendly competition to be the top seller sparked what would become a lifelong passion for helping women feel fabulous. After training as a beauty therapist and electrologist, Maree opened her own clinic in Warkworth in 1987. Over the next eight years, she ran a thriving business, earning awards for both excellence in service and record product sales.

A bold change followed – trading beauty for bulk fuel. As a sales rep in the forestry and marine sector, Maree became known as “Daisy Diesel,” confidently navigating a male-dominated industry and selling thousands of dollars in product. This unique detour sharpened her sales skills and cemented her belief that good service and genuine connection could translate into any field.
Later, with her son’s school and sports commitments taking priority, Maree opted for more flexibility. Short-term sales contracts across fashion and beauty allowed her to maintain her passion while keeping work and home in balance. In 2011, she returned to fashion retail through a role at Annah Stretton’s Pukekohe store,Birds of a Feather. There, Maree not only styled women daily but also played a key role in local events, fundraisers, photo shoots, and community outreach – a role she absolutely thrived in.
After caring for her terminally ill husband, who passed away in 2014, Maree took time to heal. A road trip through the Coromandel in 2016 changed everything. She fell in love with Tairua’s charm – and met John, a kind and practical local who had also lost his partner. A spontaneous trip to France followed, and with John’s gentle encouragement to slow down and wait for the “right thing,” Maree found herself unexpectedly enjoying life, mowing lawns, weed eating, and helping run a market stall selling her pre-loved wardrobe treasures.

Then, in November 2019, over a casual Saturday afternoon drink, Maree and John spotted a vacant shop space in Tairua. Spurred on by regular customer requests at the markets and Maree’s instinctive knack for fashion retail, the idea for a boutique blossomed. Within a week, John had built bamboo clothing racks, friends had contributed curtains and furniture, and Maree’s collection of pre-loved clothing was ready to go. On 21 December 2019,Get It On officially opened its doors.
The name? It came straight from Maree’s signature phrase from her retail days – an enthusiastic prompt in the changing room:“Just get it on!”
With John by her side, offering his constant support and often spotted lending a hand in store,Get It On quickly grew a loyal following. In 2021, Maree expanded the offering to include new labels, most notably her favourite – Annah Stretton. That same year, the store also became a hub for community fundraising and sponsorship, a passion Maree continues to champion.
In 2024, the store relocated to a more prominent site on SH25, and briefly expanded to Whitianga before Maree and John decided to focus solely on their flagship Tairua store and growing the online platform.
